And then the roof fell…..

Sounds like a thriller, doesn’t it?   But it happened Wednesday, August 10, 2011 to the Book Stop, just one business away from us on Main Street.

It has been two weeks since I sat down to tell folks about what is happening here at Big Birds Bait and Bow.  We were so excited to go to the ShowMe games in Columbia then.  Go to the web site, www.smsg.org, and see the pictures or go to the new Big Birds Bait & Bows facebook page.  Of the NODAHO Bow Hunters (www.nodahobowhunters.com) that attended, there were five gold, one silver, and one bronze medal earned at the shoot.   We were pleased with the shoot and encourage your participation.  It is a very relaxed shoot and once my nerves calmed down, I enjoyed it, rain and all.  (By the way, Nodaho Bowhunters have a facebook page.    Do a search for nodahobowhunters  and “ like” it.  Then you will get the news when someone posts pictures or comments.)

We got back to Maryville, lived through Monday and then the fire happened at Third and Main St.  I was so tired, I slept through it.  But not Bird.  He was up here at about 2 am trying to get the scoop on things and when he found out the electricity for the block was turned off, he got permission to get in the store to get some battery operated aerators on the bait tanks.  That saved the fish.  We only lost dozens instead of pounds.

Next, we had the demolition.  And yesterday, a wayward part fell right on the Book Stop’s roof and landed on the books.  In all this, no one has been killed or injured.  Go to the Nodaway News Leader (www.nodawaynews.com ) or Maryville Daily Forum  (www.maryvilledailyforum.com)  sites for the story and the D’Ville facebook page for some pictures.  Bird took pictures also and many of them are on his facebook page.

All this “stuff” happened and I am just now trying to encourage people to go to the NODAHO Appreciation shoot this coming Sunday.   It is one of my favorite shoots.  The club buys some items and gets donations from others to give a lot of stuff to the shooters that day.  Need to go and stay for the fun.

Till later,

Have fun and be safe.

So Much to Tell!

The SHOW-ME Games (http://smsg.org/) are this Saturday, July 30th.   Wish me luck.  I have been practicing and if I do not lose focus, I can get all six arrows on the target.  The trick is to remember the basics of form and repeat it again and again till it is automatic.  Of course most of you know that.  That kisser button in the corner of my mouth is essential to make that arrow travel the 60 yards and hit that target.  And as Rick says, “yellow is your friend.”

The next big news is (drum roll) – Mathews has release a new women’s bow and I get to shoot one.  It is called “Jewell” and it is fast and pretty.  What more could you ask?  Go to www.mathewsinc.com to learn more about the specifications.   I am getting a black one with silver graphics and a focus grip. It was hard to decide between the teal graphics and the silver graphics.  The teal is very, very pretty.  The deciding factor was the arrow fletching.   Right now I am shooting yellow and green fletching.   That would not be ascetically pleasing with teal.  Silver is very elegant and color wise will not fight with whatever the fletching I end up shooting.  Most likely, the fletching will be partly yellow.  Bird really does like yellow.

Another new product we are stocking now is “Lucky Buck.”  You want big antlers; this stuff promises to make the deer grow to their full potential.  The deer heads the salesman brought by to show us were awe inspiring.   Of course, the heads were replicas; one was of the Amish Lucky Buck.   To see the heads and look at the literature, go to the web site, www.luckybuck.com.     They also have a facebook page and are running a trail cam contest right now.  There are some good pictures of big antlers in that contest already.

The NODAHO APPRECIATION SHOOT is coming up.  August 13th is the 3-D NIGHT SHOOT and August 14th is the APPRECIATION SHOOT.   We are doing something different this year.  You will have to come and see.  The Appreciation Shoot is one of my favorites.  This year, Big Birds Bait and Bow will not be giving away an Ignition to a youngster.    This year, it will be either a Craze or a Menace, dependent upon their size.  Go to www.missionarchery.com to see why we are so excited about these bows.  Or go to their facebook page and see the comments by people who have purchased the bows.

Speaking of facebook pages, the facebook group for Big Birds Bait and Bows is scheduled to be archived.  We have started a facebook place page.  We need a few more of you to go there and “like” the page before it can be fully up and running.

Be safe and have fun,

Mrs. Bird

Those Lazy Hazy Days of Summer!!!

Have any of you had any of those yet?   Seems like there is one event after the other these days.  I am so glad the Nodaway County Fair  is over.  The long hours and poor eating (turkey legs, tenderloins, sandwiches and NO vegetables) has made me a cluts .   Maybe I will get some rest before the sidewalk sale starts next Friday.  But I am not counting on it very hard.  I got talked into participating in the Show Me games in Columbia.   That is July 30th.  I am not really sure about it all, yet.  We have shot 3 evenings, working out the sight settings and Bird wanted to go again on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday of this week at the least.    However, we collapsed on Sunday, we did shoot Monday evening, and today (Tuesday) Bird had a tooth extracted and is home in bed.  I don’t know how Rick did it last year when he had a tooth pulled and then got on the plane to go to Vegas for the World Archery Festival.

Need to talk about the new stuff.  Have another chair.  No, Big Birds Bait & Bow is not becoming a furniture store, even if I do talk a lot about chairs lately.  This chair is a pack chair.  Go to www.sittinghawk.com and read about it.  It weighs about 8.5 pounds and is really comfortable.  You can come into the store and try it out.  The legs adjust so you can set on a hill.  I think it is comfortable.  It should be with as thick a pad that it has.  It is available in Lost Camo, so you know what camo we got.

About Lost Camo, there is a new website, www.lostcamo.com that has the lost camo licensed products on it.  Plus, you can upload pictures of your trophies provided you have some lost camo in the picture.  I thought about sending in Bird’s picture with his last year’s turkey.   He is wearing his camo bearcat hat.

Some samples of new arrows came in this past week.  I wish they had come in earlier and were available in the size I need.  They are called Victory Ice.  They are coated with a slick finish that enables one to pull the arrows out of the target better.  I talked to the salesman and he said that in the comparison tests, the arrows performed just as well as coating the arrow with Woody’s or Scorpion Venom.  He said that they had shot an arrow a 100 times and the coating had not worn off or decreased in slickness.    He said the coating did not add weight to the arrow and they thought they were picking up a few feet per second  at 30 and 40 yards.   Bird has one in his quiver to try.  But doesn’t that sound great!   No more getting the slickum on your hands and having trouble holding onto your bow.

Come by this weekend for the sidewalk sale.

Have fun and be safe.

Look who hacked you’re account ha-ha

Happy birthday daddy bird from little bird!!!  Look who hacked you’re account ha-ha.  My bow is pretty dang cool, I got a custom Mathew’s passion bow its black with purple and pink flowers in it, plus I have my named engraved in it how sweet is that!! Now daddy bird can’t sell my bow anymore.  I shoot a tru ball release and it works great I think it’s the best release out there.  My sting for it is pink, black, and purple too woot!!!  I shot from 50 yards on father’s day, I’ve never acceded 20 before. I beat daddy bird from 30 yards and 40 yards.  My bow goes to 50 pounds. I always have to borrow mommy bird’s arrows because daddy bird always sells mine.  Mommy birds only down to 4 arrows now so it’s hard to borrow them when there’s none to borrow.  Guess I’ll have to make some for myself, good thing I know how.

If you haven’t checked out facebook yet, head to big birds profile and check out his cinnamon roll with thermal candle birthday cake. Isn’t that a site to see? talk about a little bit goofy for a birthday candle don’t you think.  Ssshhh don’t tell big bird I think we might rent a movie tonight for his birthday. Most likely a good action film.

Little bird

Ghost Blinds are here!!!!

The Ghost Blinds came in yesterday.  You should have seen Bird and I removing the protective film.  Or rather, I’m glad no one was around.  We will have a Ghost Blind set up  at the Nodaho 3-D shoot on Sunday.  I think they will work really well.   As they say on the video, “Not seeing, is believing.”

The Hooyman extendable saws just arrived today.  They are great for cutting branches out of your shooting lanes or trimming up trees around the house.  Also, the Mathews flyer came today.  If you have not got one in the mail, and would like one, come by the store and pick one up.

Well, yesterday was my birthday and we got to go to the Wednesday shoot for Nodaho members.  Bird even won the pot for guessing the closest to his actual score without going over.  And, Jeannette made brownies to celebrate my birthday.  If I had shot better, it would have a really terrific evening.  I didn’t even get ticks.  Last time we shot, I found two ticks after I got home and I had used OFF.  I still have the scabs and itches from where the ticks bit in.  However, last night, I dug out the Avon tick and mosquito spray before I even got out my bow.  I did have a mosquito buzz around my head, but it never lit.  Of course, Bird said we didn’t get ticks on us because of the other “white meat” (Richard P.) available.

Have Fun and Be Safe!

It is time to get ready!!!

Yes, Bird bought his archery tags for the deer season, last week.  The new shipment of Dead Down Wind came in last Friday and today a new product called “Nose Jammer” arrived.  If this stuff works, it will make archery hunting a whole lot easier.  The web site is: www.NoseJammer.com.    Now I don’t think you can spray it on you and be mistaken for a tree as you walk among the deer, but the concept is pretty good and it was developed by an outfitter.   If I was to do anything but hunt out of a blind, I would use it.  I have a hard time with the wind and figuring out how to keep the deer from being alerted to my presence.

Another nice item came in today.  NAP BloodRunner Broadheads with stickers for a $10 rebate.  That means that one of the cheapest broadheads will be one of the best.  If you come in and ask me, I will print off the rebate form for you.  It is good on the BloodRunners that do not have the sticker also.  They just have to be purchased before October 31, 2011 and you have to send in the receipt, barcode and form.

Need to tell you all that the Happy Birthday discount of $5 ends this Saturday, July 9th.  But I am working on Bird to discount some mroe of the discontinued bows.  He has already discounted the Monsters and the Reezen that were discontinued.  If you buy them here at the store, you still get the full warranty.   The more bows that I see come in the door, the more I like that warranty.   The fact that the warranty still covers one dry fire has been a blessing to many a bow owner.   These high poundage bows can really be damaged.  One bow had all the parts except the riser and the idler wheel replaced.  The owner only had to pay for the string and cables.

If any of you go fishing, would you let me know how you did?  Got a call today asking how the walleye were hitting at Mozingo.  I couldn’t tell them much since no one has told me.  Last week someone told me that the crappie were hitting, if you could find the right place.  Today, a fellow told me the catfish were biting on shad sides.   However, last week the bait of choice was Wicked Sticky Sewer Bait.

Well, till next time.  Have fun and be safe.

PO ed at Cabelas

Well last Sunday we traveled to Kansas City Cabelas to purchase booties for the Bird.  After all, with all the walking he has been doing, he wore a hole in the toe of the tennis shoes and his boots started wearing funny.  I know, he could have ordered the shoes, but you never know about the fit.  He wears various sizes based on the cut of the shoe.    From experience, I knew we had to go and try them on.  All was going fairly well.  He found a pair of “tennis shoes” for $94 and a pair of boots that fit.  Then we went exploring.  There was nothing in the bargain cave and we wandered over to the archery section.  It was then that my dander started rising.  They had the same Plano bow cases that we have, but they were charging $10 more.  If that wasn’t bad enough, when we went over to the gun section, I looked at the Hodgon Pyrodex and it was $6 more.  Then we went to the checkout and the shoes I picked up under the sign that said $94, was really $109.   I was so happy to leave.  As Bird said, he didn’t know how to react to the whole price thing.  Maybe we should congratulated them on the marketing job they are doing.  It is not the first time I have seen a higher price on a product.  This  Spring when we went to the Bass Pro in Columbia, MO, I saw they were charging $3 more for the Quiver Critter.

The Fall Deer and Turkey pamphlets came today.  You can pick one up here at the store.  Licenses go on sale July 1st.   Hopefully we will get our download soon.  There are a few changes to the regulations.  One is the movement of the youth season so that it doesn’t conflict with Halloween.  Also, the transportation tags are no more.  You need a plastic bag and a twist tie to attach the tag/permit to the animal.  Another new thing is a special online certificate for kids and adult who harvest their first deer.  I think that is neat.

New stuff:  Some nice Mathews sweatshirts and some neat tweed sock hats came in today.  The sock hat has fleece lining around the ears.   Also,we received  some G5 broadheads.   That is the first of the broadheads.   There is a bunch coming in the next couple months.  We also have some limbsaver rifle/crossbow slings that are nice looking.

Till next time.  Be safe and have fun.

The next big holiday!

You all expect me to say that the next big holiday is the 4th of July.   Well, you are slightly mistaken.  The next big holiday around here is Big Bird’s birthday.  So to celebrate, if you bring in a birthday card or “happy birthday Big Bird” written on a piece of paper and signed with your name, I will give you $5.00 off on any purchase of an item over $50.

In regard to new stuff, it has been a slow week.  Got in some rifle and crossbow slings, some new Bohning quivers, some JPS lures and the Mathews knife set commemorating the millionth bow produced.  The knife set is for viewing only.  Big Bird does not plan to sell it.  The quivers are nice.  They can either be black or lost camo.  Plus, they have a neat design.  For the person who wanted the black hip quiver, we have those in now.  However, they are a more expensive version.

On the fishing front, I heard they pulled a 45 pound cat out of Nodaway lake within the last two weeks.  I know last year a fellow pulled a 50 pound + cat out one day and another one the next day.  Then he said it went dry.  With the river being up, the fish should be moving.  Some people have been getting hits on chicken liver, some on goldfish, some on stink bait and some are using fresh perch.  Guess it where you are and gourmet tastes of your catfish that determines what works.

We will be getting in some new hooks and some spinner baits either Friday or Monday.  Bird read an article praising Bass Pro Spinner baits, so we are getting in some.  Also, we are getting in some different frogs.  We already got Bird’s new hunting lounge chair for him to try out for his antelope hunt.  It is just one of his birthday presents.

Well till next time,

Have fun and be safe.

Mrs. Bird

New Stuff

Hello, again.

My computer crashed and my son had to resurrect it.   So haven’t kept you up-to-date on all that has come in.   I will try to list it all.  Remember, if you want something that we don’t have, most likely we can order it in for you.  No, we can’t get everything, but Bird has developed a large network of suppliers.

1st.  This Wednesday, June 15th, the 2011 Mission Test Drive Event starts.  You have to come to the store, shoot  a Mission Bow, fill in the coupon and get a free Mission hat.  Now if you want, you can enter a weekly drawing by entering the coupon code at the Mission website.  But we mail the coupon in for the national drawing for an ATV.  We have the Menace, the Craze, the Endeavor and the Venture in stock.

2nd.  We have received a big shipment of binoculars from Vanguard.  Through June 30th, if you purchase a pair of Endeavor ED or Spirit ED binoculars, you will receive a FREE Quest T62 shooting stick.  If you purchase a pair of Spirit Plus or Venture Plus binoculars you will receive a FREE Porta-Aim shooting rest.  You have to fill out the coupon and mail it with proof of purchase and the box UPC code to Vanguard.  Please remind us to write you a receipt for the product.

3rd.  The Vanguard bow cases came in.  We have the one like we had last year and a bigger heavier one.  The camo one is pretty.  The one Bird took from last year survived two plane trips with multiple baggage changes.  It still looks pretty good for being tossed around that much.

4th.  The Father’s Day special on the targets is still on and now we have the Morrell Range Targets.

5th.  Got in some new Doniker stabilizers.

6th.  Have a couple dozen of the new Expert series arrows from Victory.

7th.  Got in the “Bow Trainer.”   This is a exercise product to keep you in shape for shooting during the off season or if you want to increase the poundage of your bow.  It also is to help somewhat with form.  It was developed by a physical therapist and Bird is supposed to be using it every day.   It looks like it should work.  The web site is www.bow-trainer.com.

8th.  Have another brand of game camera.   It is called the spypoint.   Bird had it on the tree at the NODAHO bow shoot yesterday and it took lots of pictures.  You can come in and look at them, if you wish.

Well, I can’t think of anything else.    Till next time,

Mrs. Bird
